Jumble Your Genres Reading Challenge 2014: May ~ Dystopian (Angelfall by Susan Ee)

This year Readers Live A Thousand LivesCorrie The Book Crazed Girl, and Lovin' Los Libros have teamed up to host the Jumble Your Genres Reading Challenge! For this challenge, the goal is to mix up the genres/categories we read. We have all had those times when we have gotten stuck in the genre/category we are currently reading and read nothing else for a while. The goal here is to mix that up! Each month a different genre/category will be featured and the goal is to read and review one book or more in that genre/category during that month.

For May the genre / category is ~ Dystopian

My Choice:

Angelfall
(Penryn & the End of Days #1)

by
Susan Ee

It's been six weeks since the angels of the apocalypse destroyed the world as we know it. Only pockets of humanity remain.

Savage street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night.

When angels fly away with a helpless girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back...

My Thoughts

Angelfall is a book which has been on my TBR list for quite a while. What was I waiting for? I don't know but I'm glad it finally found its way to the top of the pile.

Penryn is a seventeen year old girl, who up until six weeks ago, was leading a normal teenage life. Then the angels attacked and her world came crashing down. Living in the post-apocalyptic Silicon Valley is not easy. Every day is a struggle, a struggle to find food, water and a safe place to hide. With a disabled sister and dysfunctional mother to take care of, for Penryn, it is even harder.

One day, as she moves her small family from one home to another, she comes across one angel being chased by several others. Unable to continue on her path, she watches on in horror as the single angel is caught and then mutilated by having his wings severed from his back. Taking pity upon him as he lays weak and bleeding on the ground, she comes to his rescue. Unfortunately, her selfless act comes with a price. Having left her sister unguarded, she is taken by one of the other angels. Her mother, frightened and confused, runs away. With both of her family members gone, Penryn (with the help of Raffe, the wingless angel) embarks on a journey to get them back.

I really liked Penryn. She is a strong character who is filled with determination and courage. I also liked Raffe. He is an angel with attitude. And he's also hot and totally swoon worthy. There are other interesting characters in this book. Obi - the leader of the resistance who seems to have a soft spot for Penryn, and Tweedledum and Tweedledee - twins who are kind of cheeky and fun.

I don't normally read Dystopian, but this was a great book which is written at a fast pace and really captured my attention. I definitely recommend it to people who enjoy reading this genre.

My Rating: 5 out of 5

  1. So happy you picked this one up! I adore this series-- it gets better with each book-- and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! Raffe is totally swoon worthy and Penryn is a very strong character. The story line and the world that Susan developed just really takes you away.

    Lovely review!

  3. Oooh... great review Marilyn! Glad you loved this one! Dystopian's are fun, when you are in the mood, but I think this one helped with the Angel aspect thrown in too. Penryn and Raffe sound like fun characters to read about!
