Jumble Your Genres Reading Challenge 2014: August ~ City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

This year Readers Live A Thousand LivesCorrie The Book Crazed Girl, and Lovin' Los Libros have teamed up to host the Jumble Your Genres Reading Challenge! For this challenge, the goal is to mix up the genres/categories we read. We have all had those times when we have gotten stuck in the genre/category we are currently reading and read nothing else for a while. The goal here is to mix that up! Each month a different genre/category will be featured and the goal is to read and review one book or more in that genre/category during that month.

For August the genre / category is ~ Paranormal

My Choice:

City of Heavenly Fire
(The Mortal Instruments #6)

by
Cassandra Clare

In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary's own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris - but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee - even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned...

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!

My Thoughts

I read the first five books of The Mortal Instruments just over a year ago in quick succession. And then like everyone else, I had to wait for the release of book 6.
Was it worth the wait? You bet you.

Cassie did an excellent job in writing the ending to this series.
Sure, it's long - 733 pages long, but once you start reading, you may find it kind of hard to stop.
I know I did. I had a difficult time putting this baby down.

I guess part of what captivated me so much was that this book is not focused just on Clary and Jace and all that they have to endure, but also on many of the secondary characters that we have come to know and love as the story has developed.
Isabelle and Simon
Alec and Magnus
and yes, even Sebastian / Jonathan.
They all feature quite largely in these final pages of the series and the way their stories are intricately interwoven makes for a very interesting read.
Definitely one you will not want to miss.

My Swoon for this week comes from:

Tall, Tatted and Tempting
(The Reed Brothers #1)

by
Tammy Falkner

First - The Blurb:

This book is not meant for individuals under the age of 18 due to adult language, adult sexuality and adult situations.

She’s locked up tight. But he might be the key.

Logan Reed is tall, tatted and tempting. Kit’s a woman with a mean right hook and a secret.

Kit wants a tattoo, but Logan sees more than she intends to share in the drawing of the tat she wants. He sees her in ways no one ever has.

Logan’s not disabled; but he hasn’t spoken in eight years. He hasn’t needed to. Until he meets Kit.

Logan doesn’t know everything about Kit. Kit doesn’t know anything about herself, until she has to sacrifice all she ever wanted to save what’s most important to him.

Second - The Swoon(s):

Swoon 1

"Thank you," she says. She stands up on tiptoe and kisses my cheek almost like it's an afterthought.

That kiss touches me like the deepest tongue kiss never has. It's like my breath is trapped in my throat and I can't draw it in or out."

Swoon 2

She pulls my head toward hers, and she kisses the corner of my mouth. Then she kisses the other corner. I can't take much more. I chase her lips with every move she makes. She's smiling when she finally presses her lips to mine. I can feel it against my mouth. I keep my eyes open because I need to see her face. I'm holding her in my hands, and I slide my fingers into her hair at her temples.

Logan initially appears as a bad-boy but it doesn't take long to discover that beneath the cool exterior hides a sweet and sensitive guy. Deaf since the age of thirteen, he hasn't spoken a word for the past eight years, largely, because he hasn't felt the need to. Then he meets Kit (Emily), and the words begin to flow.

“I've been locked in my own world for a really long time," he says. I have an excuse to keep people away, because of my disability. And then I saw your tattoo..." I turn his wrist over and trace my finger across it. He shudders at my touch, closing his eyes tightly. "And I felt like maybe, just maybe, we were locked in our own little worlds and could let each other out.”

Kit, full of secrets and hiding from a past that wants to control her, is initially reluctant to let Logan get too close. However, he's not one to give up easily. Sensing that she is different from anyone else he has ever met before, he pursues her, and slowly, manages to win her over.

Their story touched my heart. It is deeply emotional and definitely worth reading.

My Tease for this week comes from:

Beautiful Oblivion
(Beautiful #3)

by
Jamie McGuire

First - The Blurb:

The Beautiful Disaster and Walking Disaster phenomenon continues in the first heart-pounding new adult romance in The Maddox Brothers series.

Fiercely independent Camille "Cami" Camlin gladly moved on from her childhood before it was over. She has held down a job since before she could drive, and moved into her own apartment after her freshman year of college. Now tending bar at The Red Door, Cami doesn’t have time for much else besides work and classes, until a trip to see her boyfriend is cancelled, leaving her with a first weekend off in almost a year.

Trenton Maddox was the king of Eastern State University, dating co-eds before he even graduated high school. His friends wanted to be him, and women wanted to tame him, but after a tragic accident turned his world upside down, Trenton leaves campus to come to grips with the crushing guilt.

Eighteen months later, Trenton is living at home with his widower father, and works full-time at a local tattoo parlor to help with the bills. Just when he thinks his life is returning to normal, he notices Cami sitting alone at a table at The Red.

As the baby sister of four rowdy brothers, Cami believes she’ll have no problem keeping her new friendship with Trenton Maddox strictly platonic. But when a Maddox boy falls in love, he loves forever—even if she is the only reason their already broken family could fall apart.

In the first installment of the Maddox Brothers books, readers can experience the rush of reading Beautiful Disaster for the first time, all over again.

Second - The Tease:

"I'm just trying to keep things simple."

Trenton took a step toward me. "This isn't simple. Not even close."

"It is simple. Black and white. Cut and dry."

Trenton grabbed me by the shoulders and planted a kiss on my mouth. Sheer shock made my lips hard and unforgiving, but then they melted against his, along with the rest of my body. I relaxed, but my breathing picked up, and my heart beat so loud I was sure Trenton could hear it. His tongue slipped between my lips, and his hands slid down my arms to my hips, his fingers digging into the skin. He pulled my hips against his as he kissed me, and then sucked my bottom lip when he pulled away.

"Now it's complicated." He grabbed his keys and shut the door behind him.

If you are familiar with Beautiful Disaster, then you will know that Trent (Trenton) is one of the five Maddox brothers.

Is he as hot as Travis? You bet you.
Is he as extreme in his behavior as Travis? Close, but not quite.
When he falls in love, is it completely? He's a Maddox, they only seem to give their hearts once... so that would be a Yes!
Did I enjoy reading Trent and Cami's story? Without a doubt.
Am I looking forward to the next book in this series? Oh, yeah.

Beautiful Oblivion is a great read and most definitely worth your consideration.

My Rating: 5 out of 5

Why haven't I read this book?
Well, after preparing this post and asking myself that very question, I decided to bump it up the list and read it right now.
You can check back Thursday to see my thoughts.

SO NOW IT'S YOUR TURN!
