Teaser Tuesday #13 & Review - Persephone

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn't give too much away! You don't want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Okay! So today I'm going to do something a little different. I'm going to include a review along with my Teaser. I should mention that this was a request made by the author, and after reading the blurb and becoming sufficiently intrigued, I agreed.

Title: Persephone
Author: Kaitlin Bevis

There are worse things than death, worse people too

The “talk” was bad enough, but how many teens get told that they’re a goddess? When her mom tells her, Persephone is sure her mother has lost her mind. It isn’t until Boreas, the god of winter, tries to abduct her that she realizes her mother was telling the truth. Hades rescues her, and in order to safely bring Persephone to the Underworld he marks her as his bride. But Boreas will stop at nothing to get Persephone. Despite her growing feelings for Hades, Persephone wants to return to the living realm. Persephone must find a way to defeat Boreas and reclaim her life

My Review
I’m not very familiar with Greek Mythology so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect when I started to read this book. However, despite my lack of knowledge, I found it to be very entertaining. It is well written. The characters and scenes are described clearly making it easy for the reader to follow the story.
As mentioned in the blurb, it is a tale about a young girl, Persephone (also referred to as Kora) whose world is suddenly turned upside down when she discovers that she is not human, but the Goddess of Spring. Like any young teenage girl living in the modern world, she has trouble believing it and initially rebels. It is only when Boreas - the God of Winter - tries to abduct her and she is saved by Hades and brought to the Underworld, that she becomes convinced.
Learning that by saving her, Hades has marked her as his bride, she must not only come to terms with her new environment, but also the fact that she is now Queen of a world she had known nothing about. Although Persephone would like to return home, with Boreas searching for her with evil intent, she has no choice but to remain where she is, at least until winter is over.
I like the way Kaitlin develops the relationship between Persephone and Hades. I also like the way she portrays Hades as kind and caring rather than as evil and completely domineering. The introduction and interaction of other characters such as Cassandra (the prophetess), Thanatos (Persephone’s personal guard) and Charon (Persephone’s self-defence teacher), was also interesting and well done.
For those of you who like Greek Mythology, I think you will get a lot of enjoyment out of this book. I should also mention that it is the first in a trilogy and so it will be interesting to see in which direction Kaitlin takes the story.
My Rating: 4/5 Stars

And now for the Teaser:
Hades stood and moved closer to me, pressing me against the wall. I drew in a shuddering breath as Hades leaned closer, his lips almost brushing mine.
He's going to kiss me, I realized. My heart thudded; I wasn't prepared for this. I hadn't thought the whole goddess-charm thing through so well.

  2. Nice teaser and review! I love Greek mythology! I especially love seeing this myth redone. Originally Hades is the one to kidnap Persephone not so much because he loved her, but it was one of the gods...totally forgetting which, but I thought it was Eros unless it was one of the others, shot him with one of the magic love arrows and Persephone was the one he saw and fell in love with.

So I suppose he did end up loving her in a way. But it was a bitter beginning of kidnapping and then tricking her into staying for half the year with the dreaded Pomegranate.

It's definitely one of the most popular myths now!

    Here's my Teaser

    Have a GREAT day!

  9. Fun teaser. Not sure about this one yet. I've read variations of this story before and I'm afraid to read this for fear of comparing and not being happy. Still considering.
